On June 5th to the 7th, the MinoriTeam competed in the Southern Fried 2008 poetry slam. They took first place! This video shows one of those pieces that propelled the MinoriTeam to victory!

This poem is called “Bleed,” and starts off talking about his cancer survival, goes into a simple question of a child and the complex answer it really should be, while giving the simplest answer you can.

“Battlefields and Bruises” is a powerful piece done by Lizz Straight and Asia! A great poem starting off with some humor and then quickly getting serious showing the seriousness of this world in its current state. Change starts with yourself. And the human does need to be put back in humanity....

We saved our best for last. Our final political poem is here: “A Poem of Hope” is a masterful poem and video by Laura Lynn MacDonald. Told by little children and parents, as well as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The overall theme of the poem is in the title....Hope.

The message states what is most important in this election, what is truly needed and how in order to overcome the hardships we are in now, we need not only change, but hope as well. This is our not only about us, but about our future. Don’t you hope for a better one?

Our 6th submitted poem comes from the poet Kamal Supreme and is entitled “The ‘N’ Word.” This is the most controversial of our submitted pieces. Kamal Supreme is taking a stand against a word that is perhaps the most vile of all words.

“A few summers ago in Hackensack NJ and it was a beautiful day. I noticed a barber that I hadn’t seen in a couple of years and there was a lot of people outside and he shouted from about 60 feet away “What’s up my nigger?” and it felt more condescending to me than it did like a term of endearment. I knew the brother meant well, but when it was time to write some poetry, the event was still with me.”
